s-process enrichment of ultrafaint dwarf galaxies

چکیده
We study the production of barium (Ba) and strontium (Sr) in ultrafaint dwarf galaxies (UFDs). Both r- s- processes produce these elements, one can infer contribution r-process from characteristic abundance pattern, whereas s-process remains largely unknown. show that current yield asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars is not sufficient to explain Ba Sr abundances observed UFDs. Production elements would need be efficient beginning star formation galaxies. Supernova Enrichment of Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies
Many dwarf galaxies exhibit sub-Solar metallicities, with some star-to-star variation, despite often containing multiple generations of stars. The total metal content in these systems is much less than expected from the heavy element production of massive stars in each episode of star formation. Such a deficiency implies that a substantial fraction of the enriched material has been lost from th...
متن کاملUncovering Extremely Metal-poor Stars in the Milky Way’s Ultrafaint Dwarf Spheroidal Satellite Galaxies
We present new metallicity measurements for 298 individual red giant branch stars in eight of the least luminous dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) in the Milky Way (MW) system. Our technique is based on medium-resolution Keck DEIMOS spectroscopy coupled with spectral synthesis. We present the first spectroscopic metallicities at of stars in a dwarf galaxy, with individual stellar metallicities ...
متن کاملGiant Halos in Dwarf Irregular Galaxies vs. Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies
We present a discovery of a giant stellar halo in NGC 6822, a dwarf irregular galaxy in the Local Group. This halo is mostly made of old red giants, showing striking features: 1) it is several times larger than the main body of the galaxy seen in the optical images, and 2) it is elongated in the direction almost perpendicular to the HI disk of NGC 6822. The structure of this stellar halo looks ...
متن کاملSubstructure in Dwarf Galaxies
Recent years have seen a series of large-scale photometric surveys with the aim of detecting substructure in nearby dwarf galaxies. Some of these objects display a varying distribution of each stellar population, reflecting their star formation histories. Also, dwarf galaxies are dominated by dark matter, therefore luminous substructure may represent a perturbation in the underlying dark materi...
متن کاملDwarf Elliptical Galaxies
Dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies, with blue absolute magnitudes typically fainter thanMB = 16, are the most numerous type of galaxy in the nearby universe. Tremendous advances have been made over the past several years in delineating the properties of both Local Group satellite dE's and the large dE populations of nearby clusters. We review some of these advances, with particular attention to how...
